Antonov An-178 Specs, Cargo Payload, Engine, and Price – The Antonov An-178 is a medium-short haul transport aircraft currently being developed by Antonov, a company based in Ukraine. The first An-178 prototype was launched in Kyiv on April 16, 2015. The aircraft will be available in civil and military configurations, and will replace old aircraft such as the Antonov An-12, Antonov An-26 and Antonov An-32.

Construction on the second An-178 aircraft began in March 2015 while the aircraft's first flight was expected to take place at the end of 2015. An-178 is expected to face potential competition from Alenia C-27J Spartan, EADS CASA C-295, Lockheed Martin C-130J, Embraer KC-390 and Ilyushin Il-214.

The An-178 is based on An-158 aircraft produced by Antonov. The fuselage is built with aluminum alloy and composite materials. A semi-monocoque aircraft with a round cross section integrating wings, wing wings, and T-tail that is being swept away. This includes a retractable landing gear with two main bogie wheels and one nose wheel.

The AN-178 base platform can be developed into a number of civil and military variants. The fuselage and onboard equipment are combined with the AN-148 and AN-158 aircraft.

The aircraft can carry 99 soldiers, 80 paratroopers or evacuate 70 sick and injured people. This can be used in various missions including troop logistical support, parachute drooping cargo on platforms or small troop divisions, carrying injured personnel, and light vehicle transportation. This can also be used to transport and send equipment and machinery.

The aircraft has a wider and full-pressure cargo compartment, which can carry up to 18 tons of cargo over 1,000 km. It has a cargo capacity above 10t and can reach a range of more than 4,000 km. It can accommodate high capacity 1C containers with a lateral size of 2.44m х 2.44m, and IATA maritime and container containers.

The An-178 transport aircraft is powered by two D-436-148FM turbofan engines developed by Ivchenko-Progress. Each machine produces takeoff thrust of 7.880kgf. D-436-148FM has a dry weight of 1,450kg and an inlet diameter of 1,390mm.

This aircraft is equipped with digital avionics, and a glass cockpit. It can fly in intensive air traffic, under VFR and IFR weather conditions both day and night. It can take off and land on non-paved runways and gravel-covered surfaces.

The flight deck integrates a dual duplex fly-by-wire system with two control channels including the FCS-A and FCS-B sections. This also includes flight simulators for training flight crews.

The flight control surface of the aircraft is an aileron, four control spoilers, six lift-dump / speed-brake, steering and elevator spoilers, and an emergency mechanical cable backup system.

The price of the latest 178 aircraft is around US $ 40 - 70 Million. In March 2015, Maximus Air signed an MoU with Antonov to order an undisclosed number of An-178 twinjet civil variants. Maximus will be the customer for the launch of the An-178 aircraft.
